  • Big Oil seeks to buy California public policy Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Well, let’s hope voters see through this bit of manipulation as clearly as they did the recent efforts by Pacific Gas & Electric and Mercury Insurance to buy their own California public policies.

Texas oil giants Valero Energy Inc. and Tesoro Corp. won approval Tuesday for a ballot initiative that would overturn California’s 2006 groundbreaking global warming law to limit greenhouse emissions from cars, refineries and other contributors. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars gathering signatures under the California Jobs Initiative Committee, a Coalition of Taxpayers, Employers, Food Producers, Energy, Transporation and Forestry Companies.

My, what an inclusive sounding group that is, in essence, the oil companies trying to buy what they couldn’t get through the legislative process. What a perversion of a mechanism that was born out of fear of corporate influence on politics.

But remember, we’re all fellow citizens now.
