Breast cancer charity accused of misleading women on mammograms
Friday, August 3, 2012
CNN: Two researchers say the breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure has misrepresented the benefits of mammograms, saying the organization “overstated the benefits of the procedure and totally ignored the risks,” reports Saundra Young. The paper by Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice professors Steven Woloshin and Lisa Schwartz criticized a mammography campaign the Komen foundation ran last October during breast cancer awareness month. According to Young, Woloshin says “for every life saved by screening two to 10 women are misdiagnosed, suffer anxiety and undergo unnecessary radiation, chemotherapy or surgery.”
