Iowa jury awards $33 million after faulty tire causes fatal crash
Friday, March 26, 2010
Des Moines Register: Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has been ordered to pay more than $33 million by an Iowa jury that held the company liable for a van rollover that killed one passenger and left another paralyzed from the neck down. Jurors decided “the tire was defective, with a chemical flaw in the rubber that allowed part of the tire’s steel belt to rust and weaken,” according to Grant Schulte‘s report. The verdict included $1.5 million in punitive damages, three-fourths of which will go to a state fund for crime victims.
