Nursing homes hit with $670 million in damages for understaffing
Thursday, July 8, 2010
Los Angeles Times: A Humboldt County jury ordered national nursing home chain Skilled Healthcare Group Inc. to pay $670 million in damages after finding the chain’s 22 assisted-living facilities in California were understaffed in violation of the state health code. The jury will discuss possible punitive damages next week. During the nearly eight-month-long trial, family members described residents of the nursing homes with soiled pants and catheters dragging on the ground, lacking attention because of inadequate staffing. Skilled Healthcare’s stock price went down 75 percent the day after the verdict.
