On Obama, Iowa Republicans and the word “esquire”
Friday, July 30, 2010
Look at this as the political version of “National Treasure,” where conspiracy theories propel us down a rather entertaining rabbit hole.
We are speaking, of course, about the 13th Amendment. Not the one that abolished slavery, but the earlier version about accepting titles of nobility, including “esquire,” and which didn’t get ratified. Unless it really did but through a conspiracy was left to dangle and then disappear during the Civil War years.
Those who believe in the conspiracy angle — which apparently includes the Iowa Republican Party — also say that the original 13th Amendment could strip President Obama of his citizenship. And lawyers, too, if they use the “Esq.” after their names.
And you thought the “birthers,” who believe Obama was not American-born, were a little off their rockers.
Newsweek lays it all out here. And I link to it purely for your morning enjoyment.
