Owner of West Virginia mine where 29 died “valued production over safety”
Tuesday, December 6, 2011
Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette: The disaster that killed 29 miners at West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch coal mine in April 2010 was “entirely preventable,” according to a report on the incident by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. The report lambastes the mine’s then-owner, Massey Energy, and operating subsidiary, Performance Coal Co., according to reporter Ken Ward, Jr., referring to an “unwarrantable failure” to follow federal safety rules, a “reckless disregard” for safety examination requirements, and a “pervasive culture that valued production over safety.”
