Skechers agrees to settlement after unfounded claims about benefits of their shoes
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
Associated Press: Skechers USA Inc. has agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges that the company made “unfounded claims that its Shape-ups shoes would help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles,” according to the Associated Press report. Kim Kardashian and Brooke Burke were among the celebrities the company used to endorse their shoes. Other shoes made by the company affected by the settlement are Resistance Runner, Toners, and Tone-ups. According to the Federal Trade Commission, which brought the charges, most of the settlement money will be returned to consumers who bought the shoes. (For more details on how consumers will receive refunds, see this news release from Blood Hurst & O’Reardon, one of the law firms representing plaintiffs in the class action suit.)
