KQED Our State of Health blog: Blogger Kat Madrigal reports on a meeting residents of the Carousel neighborhood of Carson, Calif., held with their representative in the California Assembly, Warren Furutani, to discuss ongoing health problems caused by contamination from a Shell Oil crude oil storage facility that was on the site for more than 40 years. “Environmental testing [in 2007] revealed high levels of benzene and methane under hundreds of homes,” Madrigal writes. “The contamination was traced to Shell oil wells buried under the homes.” A bill Furutani has authored, AB 1207, would remove time limits on bringing action for damages caused by exposure to hazardous or toxic materials.

Fresno Bee: Cyndee Fontana has a story about residents of Kettelman City, California, who are finally getting attention from federal officials for a rash of birth defects among children born just a few miles from a huge hazardous waste landfill. “Academic, political and other experts say the issue finally reached a boiling point — influenced by a lawsuit over landfill expansion, in-your-face activism by residents and environmental groups and a crescendo of publicity about the town’s complaints.” Kettelman City was one of the areas where water supplies were contaminated by chromium 6, the case made famous in the movie “Erin Brockovich.“
